Blog Post 8

I am continuing on my theme of using "fashion as protest." This assignment I will be focusing on a small movement that is a current example of using clothing as a way of protest, in particular protesting by youth. "One Dress Protest: a fashion fast" was began by a Kristy Powell, a regular 26 year old woman who one day decided she was fed up of the fashion industry today. She is revolting against " the unsustainable patterns of how we consume and dress ourselves in America, the insidious effects of fashion advertising, and the ways all of this stuff really makes us feel about ourselves."I am going to place myself in her shoes and join her movement as if I was to wear one dress a day for a year. She chose to protest this by wearing exactly ONE dress for ONE year and by documenting her journey on her blog. She did this to call attention to some major issues she disagreed with about fashion today. She was attempting to "combat ethical issues of dressing ourselves as 21st century Americans, and the ways we might counter the dilemmas that fashion raises in our lives." I will use majorly the tactic of transforming perceptions of realities. I will attempt to do this by fully explaining the exigence and by using the one dress as a symbol of what we are capable of given new priorities.I think this rhetorical goal is most essential because well, that is exactly what I'm trying to do, the problem is reality and to make changes to it, we must transform perceptions. I am mainly going to rely on her use of storytelling or “ a social process in the search for meaning, purpose, value, efficiency, and self-worth.”, she blogged constantly throughout the year, with each post she gave more realization, her movement was half cultural protest and half self lifestyle protest. I will continue this tactic to give a personal account encouraging readers to join in and persuade them to open their minds.
