In chapter 14 the strategy of evasion is an important tool institutions use to try and get people to not support a particular social movement. Using the media is an extremely helpful tool for many institutions. Although the media is “not inclined to report on social agitators they see as insignificant,” by not showing or reporting on matters that do not seem “newsworthy,” by keeping social movements out of the news, the public is not informed of what’s going on. More attention is given to the little things like the President’s family or celebrities that are in and out of prison. It is oftentimes that “most movements need the media, the media seldom need the movements” because there are so many other “issues” happening in society that they can cover and oftentimes they aren’t deep routed and do not really matter at all.
An example of this would be the lack of media coverage surrounding issues like women who have been through sex trafficking. We often hear about maybe a child being kidnapped and the family is reaching out trying to get others to help find them, but almost none of these cases involve sex trafficking. It’s a scary reality that the media seems to not want to inform the public about because it contains many startling truths about our society that people do not want to deal with.
