I will be fighting against human trafficking. Human trafficking in America is the modern form of slavery, “with illegal smuggling and trading of people, for forced labour or sexual exploitation.” My rhetorical goals will be to bring more awareness to high schools and college campuses because it is usually people, typically girls, in that age group that are victims. Even hundreds of thousands of American children are at risk for sex trafficking. To get the information out and educated our generation is important because we are the ones who will be able to create the change. There are federal laws in place about this issue but clearly they aren’t doing much because this is such a large problem in America. I will use stories from survivors of trafficking to put fear into people. Fear will educate those who need to be educated. Many people don’t see this as a major problem in America, but it is. The more information we can put out there, the more people will realize that this is a major issue. Some of the tactics I will rely on include polarization and legitimacy. By polarizing who is in support of the cause and who isn’t will declare who the “enemy of the movement is,” because the larger enemy is clearly those immoral people involved in the human trafficking industry already. Through legitimacy, more support will be gained for this cause because more people will understand what we are fighting for. Victims will have to speak out, because the amount of criticism about this issue is fairly large in America right now. Around only 0.4 percent of the “estimated victims of trafficking internationally had been officially ‘identified’ in the United States.” This is a very large problem that needs to be addressed.
